Assistance League of Houston is a volunteer non-profit organization founded in 1966 that returns to the Houston community an average of over 90% of the revenues from raised funds.   The organization currently provides uniform packages for HISD, Spring Branch, and Head Start elementary school children and scholarships to high school seniors as well as learning challenged students.   In addition, the league sponsors a holiday party with gifts to Texas Children’s Hospital patients and their families.   League volunteers can be found in the schools performing puppet shows that teach good habits and practices, through the Kids On The Block program.    Thanks to the more than 27,000 volunteer hours given annually by over 200 members, ALH has been able to provide over $8 million to the Houston Community ($4.5 million in the last five years), through their programs and services, helping thousands of children and adults achieve their full potential.

Proceeds from the ALH Thrift Shop are the major source of funding for the league’s philanthropic programs.  “All items sold in the Thrift Shop are donated, and all donations are tax deductible”, said 2011-12 ALH President, Barbara Robinson.   “Your generous donation to the Assistance League Thrift Shop will help sustain our programs in 2012 and beyond.”

In addition to the Thrift Shop revenues, funding is provided through annual fundraising events, and major gifts from the corporate sector, foundations, grants, memorials, stock transfers, companies with matching gift programs, and individual gifts.
